This film has been categorized under the science fiction horror genre with a variety of varying analysis of what it is about, what the ending means and so forth. My take on this film is a radical departure from what the standard, conventional and even non-conventional reviews so far have put forth. So, with that being said, here is some of what you will see if you ever watch the film: The opening scene shows a brutal depiction of bird parasitism, where the native hatchlings are killed off and thrown out of the nest, then the tricked mother feeds the invading parasite. Dogs are parasites, and they operate on a very similar mechanism as brood parasitism and the behavior, thinking and rational of dog owners prove this. The two main characters are Tom and Gemma, a handyman and schoolteacher who are looking to purchase a home. She is shown teaching young children about trees and playing games and Tom shows up at her school and climbs the tree outside being playful with her, and Gemma starts hitting the big tree and he exclaims "Ow, Ow, my bark", he climbs down and buries the dead chicks in a quick shallow grave, an ominous scene for himself and her, doing a mock ceremony. Before they leave Gemma asks Tom to change his shirt, because he stinks, just like a dog. They drive to this office where a creepy strange realtor promoting a living community called "Yonder" welcomes them with obvious out of context smiles and out of place speech mannerisms, however they end up following him to this tracked home community, that seems to be some kind of hybrid of The Truman Show, The Stepford Wives, or Dark City and the scenery reminded me of the lyrics from the song "Pleasant Valley Sunday". The non sentient tells them they should really not wait to see the place because they might not be available, as they are being "snapped" up by eager buyers, followed by how practical and tranquil the community is, everything dogs are not. The film introduces this concept of mimicking pretty quickly, where this non sentient realtor has the ability to replay conversation in the exact same voice and mannerisms of the individual it copies. They also push this home that is being shown and that home is specifically number nine, this idea is shown repeatedly again and again, on the screen with flashing subliminal messaging throughout the film. There were also nine models in the office, and the homes themselves look like a giant doghouse. The realtor walks the couple through this sterile prefabbed readymade living nightmare, and they play along nicely but are obviously very uncomfortable with the home and the bizarre behavior of the office clerk. At one point they walk to the backyard to look around, and Gemma climbs and jumps up on the fence to look over into the next yard, just like a dog would do as it harasses the neighbors. As the couple is in the backyard, this character "Martin" who is showing the house suddenly leaves and they are shocked and quickly look for him. No loss to them, they happily agree to get out of there and leave, but find they are no longer in their known reality, just a monstrous labyrinth and looping maze. They return to inside of the house and eat some of the fake food, the food has nutrients for sustenance but no taste. Another reference to dogs as these beasts' voracious rapacious obsession for food is devoid of any interest in taste or flavor. The next morning Tom climbs onto the roof of the place and looks over the horizon and sees nothing but a fake reality and infinite clones of the same, he looks just like a dog trying to get over a fence, as he tells Gemma, well cut through gardens, jump over fences, were going to get out of here. They go over fence after fence and end up back at the number nine doghouse, but now they find a package full of food delivered to the front of the home on the curb that contains some processed food, some of it looking like canned dog food. Tom instantly sets the home on fire with the cardboard from the package, the next morning they find the home as it was, sterile and perfect as before. Another reference to dog culture, as dogs set fires in about one thousand homes per year. As the couple sits there, they realize there is another package, but this one has what appears to be a human baby boy, and the home number nine is setup for a baby boy in one of the rooms. As Gemma holds the "baby" they stare at it and look at the number nine on the door. On the package were the words "Raise the child and be released". The couple comments on how quiet the neighborhood is, because any neighborhood would be rather peaceful and quiet if the four-legged plague was not present. Now overnight this mutant grows to be around eight or nine years old, and he torments and terrorizes the couple by mimicking their conversations and voices coming from him, and both Tom and Gemma give him the finger out of pure hatred and Tom calls him a creepy little mutant, just like a dog. The mutant tells them to measure me three times, so they do, and in ninety-eight calendar days he is about eight years old it appears. He is very happy about that and tells Gemma, "I grow fast a dog" followed by "What is a dog" she confirms what she already told him, and he begins to make Woof, Woof Woof sounds and she reiterates that sound and the mutant begins to run around the house like a dog terrorizing the couple.
